FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2023-95 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (May 18, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we pause to remember the deadly power of nature.

Eruption

The deadliest, with 57 killed, and most economically destructive documented volcanic eruption in the US occurred on May 18, 1980.

Mount St. Helens in southern Washington State.

The eruption literally blew the top off, and eventually the peak of Mount St. Helens shrank by about 1,300 feet.

Volcanic activity continued for about 28 years, but a new eruption is expected sometime in the future.

Mount St. Helens is relatively young among the volcanoes in the Cascades.   It is also relatively close to both Portland and Seattle, although the prevailing winds tend to not carry ash to those cities.

Johnson captured a relatively short-lived configuration of Washington and Oregon, with Washington expanding to also include today’s Idaho and parts of Montana.  The map was published in 1862.
