FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2022-016 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (January 26, 2022) – In Issue 2022-017 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we celebrate the establishing of a popular national park.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH

On January 26, 1915, President Woodrow Wilson established the Rocky Mountain National Park as the 10th national park in the US.

Originally the 358 square miles were little more than private lodges and trails built by the lodge owners.  The boom for the park came when the Civilian Conservation Corps built Trail Ridge Road in the 1930s, enabling visitors to drive in and through the area.

The Rocky Mountain National Park is the third most visited of the US national parks.  It is located between Estes Park and Grand Lake, approximately 55 miles from Denver, and straddles the Continental Divide.

Here is Ruth Taylor White’s whimsical map of Colorado from 1938.

As an added note, this posting includes two references to a famous American singer.  I’m sure you can figure it out, but if not: John Denver and his song “Rocky Mountain High” released 50 years ago.
