FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2026-053
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (April 1, 2026) – This edition of Fun with Maps celebrates technology, not fruit.
Fruity
Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs founded the Apple Company in Los Altos, California on April 1, 1977 – 50 years ago.
The first product was the Apple I computer, hand built by Wozniak and sold for $666.66 because he liked repeating digits. He was not aware what Chuck knows as the devil’s number, 666.
Funding came from Jobs selling his Volkswagen bus and Wozniak selling his HP-65 calculator. Those were the days.
Apple grew exponentially, doubling every 4 months for the first five years. The Macintosh followed and after some dead years the I-s emerged iMac, iPad, iPhone. Now it is a major Tech Company headed by Tim Cook.
Mitchell’s map of California is presented here from 1869.
