Fun with Maps ISSUE 2025-130

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (August 15, 2025) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps, we look at a historic moment in rock-n-roll stadium shows.

ARENA ROCK

Playing music to very large audiences began in earnest in the 1960’s.  In fact, the true inflection point was on August 15, 1965 in New York City’s Shea Stadium with the Beatles performing, kicking off their North American Tour in front of nearly 56,000 fans.

Prior to that, theaters, halls, and the like were the venues available.

Technology driven sound, lightning and screen advances over the subsequent decades made the stadium experience even more rewarding.

Shea stadium had a lifespan of 45 years.  It was demolished in 2009.

Here is Beers’s view of greater New York City from 1867.
