LOVELAND, OH (December 2, 2021) – In Issue 2021-228 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we celebrate the birth date of the UAE.

The United Arab Emirates

Today is the 50th anniversary of the formation of the United Arab Emirates.  The UAE was formed from six former British protectorates  – Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Sharjah, Umm Al Quain – and a seventh sheikdom, Ras al Kaimah, which joined the group in 1972.

Each of the seven emirates is ruled by a Sheikh, and one of them serves as the country’s President.

The oil and gas resources located in the UAE are among the largest in the world and the main source of economic wealth in the area although there is a significant trend toward tourism and international

In the last 50 years, a community originally made of Bedouin tribes has become one of the wealthiest countries in the world and the Dubai airport has replaced London Heathrow as the world’s busiest airport.

The UAE is in the northeast corner of the Arabian Peninsula, which is shown here by Anville in his 1794 map.
