By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (June 7, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we visit the story of a trailblazing pioneer.

THE GREAT PATHFINDER

If you live in Kentucky, you might be celebrating Daniel Boone Day today.

On June 7, 1769, Daniel Boone first viewed the forests and valleys of Kentucky and decided to explore the land and bring settlers there.  The frontiersman’s pioneering spirit made him one of the country’s earliest folk heroes.

Boone found a passageway between the Appalachian Mountains, what today is known as the Cumberland Gap, and blazed a trail that led people to the west.  The Wilderness Road became one of the most important pathways for settlers coming to the area.

Boonesborough, Kentucky was named after its founder.  Boone brought his family there before he moved on west toward Missouri.

Mitchell created this attractive map of Kentucky in 1850.
