FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2026-094

LOVELAND, OH (June 5, 2026) – This edition of Fun with Maps reminds us of the danger of political assassination.

AMERICA CALLS ANOTHER KENNEDY

Robert F. Kennedy was shot on June 5, 1968 and died the next day.  The younger brother of President John F. Kennedy and US Attorney General during his brother’s presidency was on the Presidential campaign trail.  He had just spoken to his supporters at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California when he was gunned down in the hotel kitchen.

At the time Secret Service duties did not extend to political candidates but that changed after RFK’s assassination.

RFK was a US Senator at the time and leading in the popular primary polls as the Democratic choice for President although Humphrey had secured more convention delegates.  California was considered to be the critical point where the results would turn in RFK’s favor.

Kennedy is buried in Arlington Cemetery, not far from his brother’s grave.  His son, Robert Jr., is currently the Secretary of Health and Human Services in President Trump’s cabinet.

RFK was born in Massachusetts hence this 1855 Colton map of the Commonwealth along with Rhode Island.
