FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2024-173
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (September 13, 2024) – In this edition of Fun with Maps we recall the wall ordered by an Emperor on this date over 1,900 years ago.
Hadrian’s Wall
The wall to keep the savages out. Those would be the folks in kilts – the Scots.
Emperor Hadrian ordered the erection of a fortified wall on September 13, 122.
This 73-mile-long wall is still in place today; minus the pilfering of stones by the locals to build houses and the like.
The Romans did leave a legacy well beyond a wall. They established cities – about one hundred, including London, York, Manchester, Dover, Newcastle and more. They built roads, many of which have paths used to this day. Sanization systems were put in place in cities.
Teesdale’s 1831 map of England Wales is presented here with Hadrian’s wall shown at the border with Scotland.
