FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-112 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (June 14, 2021) – In Issue 2021-112 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, a look at the independence of California.

The Bear Flag Republic

The first time California, at least parts of it, declared independence from Mexico occurred 175 years ago today.  The short-lived California, or Bear Flag, Republic lived to be 25 days old before the Mexican forces squashed this Republic situated north of San Francisco.   And, yes, the bear continues to be prominently displayed on the California flag to this day.

However, a lot happened in the following four years:  California was ceded to the US in 1848, following the Mexican American Wars.  Then came the gold rush.  Finally, California was admitted to the Union as the 31st state in 1850.

California dreamin’ indeed.

Here is Mitchell’s map of California from 30 years after the Bear Flag Republic’s formation.
