UC
No, this isn’t about the UC in Clifton, rather about the one headquartered in Oakland, California.
The University of California was founded in 1868 on this day, 18 years after California became a state.
It has ten campuses, including ones in Berkeley, Los Angeles, and San Diego. It is a huge system with over 270,000 students. Currently 69 Nobel Prize winners are on staff. It was also home to the legendary Coach John Wooden, known as the “Wizard of Westwood” for guiding his UCLA men’s basketball teams to ten NCAA Basketball Championship titles.
This California map by Mitchell was created eight years after the founding of this vast university system. San Francisco is shown in the inset.
