FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2023-19 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (January 30, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Map from Steve Kovacs, somebody is betting on a quick trip around the world.

80 Days

The wonders of travel.  Missed connections.  Wrong travel information in a newspaper (about a railroad’s completion in this case).  Drugged woman needing help.  Ambush on the train (by Sioux Indians in this case).  Hurricane stopping a ship.  Wrongful arrest.

No, it’s not about what you read online or in a newspaper today.

It is the 1870s and it is all in the mind of Jules Verne as he wrote about Phileas Fogg making an ill-advised wager about the speed of travel around the globe.  Fogg then took the epic journey together with Jean Passepartout east to west around the world.

The novel Around the World in Eighty Days was published 150 years ago today.  And they made it.

One could almost trace the journey on this double hemisphere world map by Elwe from 1792.
