LOVELAND, OH (January 21, 2025) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps we remember the death and works of a famous writer.
1984 Animals
Eric Arthur Blair died 75 years ago on January 21, 1950 in Britain. He was born 46 years prior in Bihar state of the Bengal Presidency governed by the British Empire.
He was famous for his writing under the pen name of George Orwell. He rather disliked totalitarian and authoritarian thoughts, politics and regimes.
His two most famous works are:
- Animal Farm: in this novella the farm animals rebel against their farmer, and try to form a perfect society where all animals are created equal, but the pig seizes total control and the animals are worse off than they were before.
- Nineteen Eighty-Four: a dystopian novel about the future (?) where Big Brother monitors individuals through the Truth Police to suppress individual thought to progress the party line.
This map of Northern India by Tallis from 1851 shows much of the Bengal Presidency and Bihar.
