Hoover Dam was dedicated 85 years ago (September 30, 1935) by President Roosevelt.
This massive dam on the Colorado River bordering Nevada and Arizona at Black Canyon took just 4 years to complete and holds back Lake Mead. The concrete is still not completely cured to this day.
It was originally named Boulder Dam, but Congress renamed it after President Hoover in 1947.
Here is a humorous map of Nevada (sorry Arizona) from four years after the dedication of the Dam by Ruth Taylor White. Nevada’s Area 51 is not shown – it must be a secret…
