LOVELAND, OH (July 12, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we celebrate an iconic Rock-n-Roll band.
SATISFACTION
July 12, 1962 – The place to be was London’s Marquee Jazz Club.
A new group made their debut appearance, and music history was changed forever.
The Rolling Stones – Mick Jagger, Ian Stewart, Keith Richards, Dick Taylor, and Brian Jones – filled in for another band who had the regular Thursday night spot. The group didn’t even have a name, but the story goes that when asked for the group name to publicize their appearance Jagger looked and saw a Muddy Waters album, first song titled “Rollin’ Stone”.
The creative and enduring heart of the group, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were childhood friends in Kent. Jagger’s family moved, but the two met again to talk about forming a band. In fact, there is a plaque on platform 2 of the Dartford, Kent railway station commemorating the event.
More than 400 songs, 2000 concerts and 60 years later, the Rolling Stones are one of rock’s most popular bands to come out of the British Invasion. A new album, expected out later this year, will include a collaboration with Paul McCartney, making a historic combination of superstars.
The County of Kent is in the southeast of England – Dover, Canterbury, Maidstone and Dartford, practically in greater London, are a few of its towns. Bowen’s map of Kent presented here is from 1777.
