FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-187 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (September 28, 2021) – In Issue 2021-187 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, it is a special day in California history.
CABRILLO DAY
Californians celebrate Cabrillo Day today, in honor of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s discovery of California in 1542 for Europe.
The official festival takes place in San Diego Bay and includes a reenactment of his landing.
Cabrillo was the first European to explore present-day California and spent 2 years traveling along its coastline. His explorations added a great deal of information about the western coast of North America. However, he failed at his ultimate quest to find the mythical Strait of Anian which was rumored to provide an all-water route across the continent.
Here is another pictorial state map by Ruth Taylor White from 1938. California, of course.
