Fun with Maps ISSUE 2025-161 (REWIND SPECIAL)

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (October 2, 2025) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps, we look back to October 2020 for a special “Rewind Edition” – A revolution of independence (NOTE: Steve Kovacs is on a family sojourn and will return with all new FWM Friday, October 3, 2025)

No, not Mexico

Republic of Texas declared independence on March 2, 1836.  Leading to this, the settlers revolted against Mexico. The first battle of the revolution, the Battle of Gonzales, was fought 185 years ago today.

The Republic lasted nearly ten years, and then Texas joined the Union in December 1845 as the 28th state.

Here is Mitchell’s map of the Lone Star State from the year after statehood was granted.   And yes, the shape of Texas was a bit different then, called “Stovepipe Texas”, versus today’s shape.
