FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2024-211

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (November 19, 2024) – In this edition of Fun with Maps we recognize a historic Civil War battle and Presidential address.

Of the People, by the People, for the People

The bloodiest battle of the US Civil War occurred in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  A misunderstanding of the command sent likely led to a Union victory versus a more likely Confederate victory.

The President delivered a very short, for the times then, speech to honor those who fought there.

The Gettysburg Address, delivered by Abraham Lincoln on November 28, 1863.  All men are created equal…

The Civil War was ultimately about economy.  About 650 thousand gave their life to defend their side.

Interestingly, both Presidents, Abraham Lincoln and Confederate President Jefferson Davis, were from Kentucky.

Bachelder created this view of the battle in 1863.
