DAILY FEATURE: By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (February 4, 2021) – In Issue 2021-23 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we say hello to a new Stock Market born on this date. . .

The New York City based NASDAQ stock exchange was founded 50 years ago today.  It began operations a few days later.

As the “Q” in the acronym would suggest, NASDAQ was originally an electronic Quotation system, helping to close the bid-ask spreads.  Over time it evolved into the full-fledged stock exchange which we know today.

The idea of public ownership of companies via individuals holding shares, or stocks, of said companies traces back to Roman times.  The Roman Republic contracted out many of its services to private companies, who issued stocks.  Many Roman citizens owned and apparently traded stocks.

Do you trade on the NASDAQ?
