LAS FIESTAS PATRIAS
Today Peru is celebrating its bicentennial – 200 years as an independent country.
Peru declared independence from Spain on this date in 1821, although it wasn’t until 1824 and the Battle of Ayacucho that the dream was realized.
The 2-day celebration will center in town plazas where music, dance and national food will fill the space from morning until late night. Tomorrow the military will be honored with a huge parade in Lima.
In the words of Gen. San Martin who liberated the country, “¡VIVA LA PATRIA!, ¡VIVA LA LIBERTAD!, ¡VIVA LA INDEPENDENCIA!.”
Here is Teesdale’s map of Peru and Bolivia issued ten years after Peru’s independence.
