FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2026-005
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (January 19, 2026) – This issue of Fun with Maps celebrates the birth of an iconic American writer & poet.
Nevermore
Today is Edgar Allan Poe’s birthday – January 19, 1809. He was born in Boston, orphaned at age two, fostered in Richmond and died at age 40 in Baltimore.
We all know of his literary genius – short stories, poetry, science fiction. He also was a literary editor.
He failed as a military officer, likely in part because of his somewhat combative nature.
He also had a keen interest in cryptography, but only practiced a simple version.
This map of Baltimore by Colton is from 1855.
