The Magna Carta was Signed by King John on this day in 1215.
The Magna Carta is a charter of rights and a very early symbol of individual liberty against arbitrary authority.
The American founding fathers regarded the Magna Carta as fundamental law. It was signed by the unpopular King John at Runnymede, Surrey, west of London. (Only about 3 miles from where yours truly – Steve Kovacs – worked for 5 years.) This map of county Surry is by Matthew Carey from 1787.
Steve Kovacs and his wife Theresa reside in Loveland, Ohio where they raised their two children. He is a passionate collector of antique maps.
