LOVELAND, OH (July 5, 2022) – In Issue 2022-117 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we learn how magic was at the root of today’s most common online shopping source.

What’s in a Name?

Naming can be tricky.  The origins are at times obscure.

Case in point is Cadabra, which incorporated on July 5, 1994.  Its name was a rather obtuse reference to magic.

Soon after that, the founder looked through the dictionary (paper form) and wanting his company’s name start with the letter a, he selected the name of a long South American River, not the famous woman warriors, to be the name of his online bookstore.

Love it or hate it, it is Amazon.

(Editor’s note for clarification: When Jeff Bezos first started working on Amazon, he named it Cadabra Inc. after the magical words, Abracadabra.)

Here is Teesdale’s 1831 map of Brazil, also showing most of the Amazon River, which does have piranhas fittingly enough.
