FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2023-59 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (March 29, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we celebrate the anniversary of the end of a protested conflict, and the end of an era.

VIETNAM VETERANS DAY

Today is the 50th anniversary of the withdrawal of US combat troops from Vietnam.

Although military advisors to the South Vietnamese army, Marine guards protecting US installations, and Department of Defense employees remained, the exit of the combat troops began the end of the unpopular war.

The peace treaty had been negotiated two months prior to the troops exit and included the release of prisoners of war and the peaceful reunification of North and South Vietnam.

The first US military forces were deployed to Vietnam in 1961.  Nearly 60,000 Americans died during the tenure of the military operation there.  There are about 6.2 million veterans from the war in our country today.

Take time to thank a serviceman.

This map of Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, is from 1749 and is by the French cartographer Bellin.
