LOVELAND, OH (August 29, 2022) – In Issue 2022-153 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, today it really is all about futbol (Soccer).

Brazil’s independence was declared from Portugal on August 29, 1825.

The first humans arrived here about 11,000 years ago, and the Portuguese claimed it to be theirs in 1500.  Brazil boasts about 214 million people currently, making it by far the most populous Portuguese speaking country.

Similar to the US, the nation’s permanent capital was eventually founded on an undeveloped piece of land, as opposed to an already established city.  Brasilia on the central highlands was established in 1960.   The capital was moved there from Rio de Janeiro.  Rio and San Paulo were “feuding” for a period of time over the honor of being the capital.   They both lost…

No mention of Brazil would be complete without noting, not the beaches of Rio or the Amazon wildlife, rather football or soccer as we call it.   They won five FIFA World Cup titles, the most by any nation.

Tallis’s ornate map of Brazil from 1850 is presented here.
