“AND THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE REDS!”
Although the World Series officially began in 1903, post-season interleague play began on this date in 1882 when the Cincinnati Red Stockings beat the Chicago White Stockings.
Chicago evened up the score by winning the next day and was eventually declared the winner when the American Association threatened to throw the Cincinnati team out of the league.
Although teams in the American Association had more autonomy than the rule-loving National League, Cincinnati had apparently committed an unforgivable sin: playing after the season ended.
By 1884, post-season play was established with the National League, becoming the forerunner of the World Series.
On a side note, baseball lives in its own world seemingly – just two countries constitute the world in professional baseball land…
At any rate, here is Mitchell’s map of the Queen City which predates by six years Cincinnati’s win over Chicago.
