By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (September 15, 2021) – In Issue 2021-178 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we learn of a special day in Japan for the elderly.

KEIRO NO HI – RESPECT FOR THE AGED DAY

Although now celebrated on the third Monday of the month, September 15th is a national holiday set aside to honor elderly citizens in Japan.

People return home to be with their older family members and special celebrations and entertainment take place on local levels.

So beloved are the elderly that on this day the Japanese government gives special silver sake cups to citizens who reach 100 years old that year.

Here is Colton’s map of Japan from 1855.
