Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Most Reverend Dennis M. Schnurr as Archbishop of Cincinnati

COLUMUBUS, OH (February 13, 2025) – On Wednesday the Archdiocese of Cincinnati announced the appointment of Most Reverend Robert G. Casey, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago as the 11th archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati by Pope Francis.

In the statement released by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Pope Francis announced he has accepted the resignation of Most Reverend Dennis M. Schnurr from pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and appointed the Most Reverend Robert G. Casey to Archbishop of Cincinnati.

Here is more of the text of the statement released by the Cincinnati Archdiocese:

Archbishop-designate Casey has been a priest for more than 30 years, having been ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1994. He was ordained a Bishop in 2018 by Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich, Cardinal Archbishop of Chicago.

“It is with gratitude and humility that I accept Pope Francis’ invitation to serve the present generation of faithful in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati,” said Archbishop-designate Most Reverend Robert G. Casey.  “I am profoundly grateful to Archbishop Schnurr for his kindness to me upon receiving the news of my appointment. Please join me in continuing to pray for him.”

Archbishop Schnurr offers his support for the new Archbishop of Cincinnati:

“It has been my great honor and privilege to serve the people of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati these past 15 years,” said Archbishop Schnurr. “Now, on behalf of the people of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, it is a great joy to welcome Archbishop-designate Robert Casey to his new home.” 

Archbishop-designate Casey will be installed as the 11th Archbishop of Cincinnati at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains in Cincinnati at a date to be announced. Additional information about the installation liturgy will be forthcoming.

We express our heartfelt gratitude and affection for Archbishop Schnurr and extend our prayers and congratulations to Archbishop-designate Robert G. Casey.

NOTE: Archbishop-designate Robert G. Casey spoke at a press conference held in Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter of Chains in Cincinnati on Wednesday. Reports in the media following his press conference revealed him to be enthusiastic in his responses to a variety of questions on topics surrounding the shepherding of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. He seemed well aware of any challenges facing the diocese and promised to be faithfully transparent in such matters. He expressed gratitude and humility for the opportunity to serve and expects to rely upon the experience and advice of Archbishop Schnurr. Most Reverend Robert G. Casey also called for continuing prayers for Archbishop Schnurr who has been receiving treatment for cancer.
