KLM, the Royal Dutch Airlines, was established 101 years ago today. KLM is the oldest airline in operation.
The Dutch have been leaders in exploration and transportation for many centuries – not quite trains, planes and automobiles, rather ships, planes and more ships.
Here is a map of the central portion of the Netherlands from 1680 by deWit, showing many ships out at sea. The map orients north to the right. Not until the 19th century do we find virtually all maps orienting north to the top.
