LOVELAND, OH (April 5, 2021) – In Issue 2021-64 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we enjoy some pizza history – deep dish style!

Mamma Mia!

The idea of topping a piece of bread with various flavorings or food items and then heating or baking the bread is recorded in the history of many ancient cultures.  Modern pizza evolved from these and first emerged in Naples, Italy.

Deep dish pizza; however, is all American.  It was invented at Pizzeria Uno in Chicago in 1943.  Other Chicago restaurants serving this rather thick pizza currently include Gino’s (my favorite) and Giordano’s.

And yes, today is Deep Dish Pizza Day!

This map of Chicago is by McDonald from 1871.  It was issued just after the Chicago fire and shows the “burnt districts” in red.
