FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2022-158 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (September 6, 2022) – In Issue 2022-158 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we go south for some grocery shopping news.

SHOPPING MADE EASY

You might be surprised to learn who opened the first true self-serve supermarket.  It was opened on September 6, 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee.

This chain standing now at 499 stores also was first to offer shopping carts, checkout lanes, pricing on each item, among other things.

Yes, we are talking about Piggly-Wiggly, a staple store in the South and parts of the Midwest.

The company founded in Cincinnati by Barney Kroger in 1883 has eclipsed Piggly Wiggly in sales, and Kroger now stands as the largest, by sales, grocery store in the US.

Here is Carey’s 1814 map of Tennessee.
