FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2022-123 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (July 18, 2022) – In Issue 2022-123 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we remember the first perfect score by an Olympic gymnast 46 years ago today.

Score 10

The first ever perfect 10 score in women’s gymnastics was awarded to the Romanian superstar Nadia Comaneci on the uneven bars at the Montreal Summer Olympics on this day in 1976.

A lot has changed since then.

Montreal and Canada finally paid off the $6.1 Billion (2015 dollars) cost overrun associated with hosting the games in 2006…

Gymnastics changed their scoring system in 2006 to the hard-to-understand FIG Code of Points, so goodbye to a perfect 10…

And Nadia now lives in Oklahoma…

Here is an 1850 Mitchell map of Lower Canada, now known as Quebec with Montreal being its most populous city.
