LOVELAND, OH (July 28, 2022) – In Issue 2022-131 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we celebrate Peru’ s 200+ years of independence.

Today begins a 2-day Independence Day celebration in Peru.  The 28th commemorates the liberation of Peru from Spain, and the 29th commemorates the establishment of the Republic of Peru.

Las Fiestas Patrias, as the 2-day celebration is known, is the most important holiday of the year.

Like the US, music, street food, dancing, fireworks and what seems to be everyone in the country being outdoors is the main part of the festivities.

However, in an election year, this is the time that a new president is sworn in and takes office.

On the side it is worth noting that Peru’s Incan culture was the largest pre-Columbian civilization in South America.

Colton captured Peru and neighboring Bolivia in this 1855 map.
