LOVELAND, OH (August 10, 2021) – The Loveland City School District Board of Education will meet tonight for a scheduled work session.

This planned work session of the Loveland School Board just eight days before the first day of classes will be the first official meeting of the LCSD Board with new Superintendent Michael Broadwater.  Recent attention has focused on the issue of protocols for COVID again as noted in “THE LEAD” story  here in the Tuesday edition of Loveland Beacon. The hot topic is the issue of mask-wearing and whether the decision should be left to the parents as currently resolved by the school, or mandated as some suggest. It has taken the spotlight off other important back-to-school planning for Loveland. It has not stolen the focus of the new Superintendent, or school board member Kevin Dougherty from putting the students first.

“At the end of the day, we just want to make sure to take care of kids and the community is part of all that,” said Broadwater. “The community has to be willing to do that with us.”

In recent conversations with me, Superintendent Broadwater has made clear his excitement about coming to Loveland and  leading the way as the new school year begins. His focus is on taking care of the kids, engaging the community and continuing to build on the foundation of great education for students in Loveland Schools. At the same time, he knows there are many challenges to be faced. You can be sure members of the school board feel the same. Dougherty said it just yesterday talking about the COVID/mask issue.

“At the end of the day, we have to use the information, data, expertise we can access to arrive at what we think is the right decsion,” said Dougherty. “That’s going to be a discussion for (Tuesday) night.”

Discussion tonight will go beyond the topic of COVID for sure. Broadwater and the board members are not unaware of recent talk regarding the topic of the thing known as Critical Race Theory (CRT). They have heard from the people on the subject via email and even in public meetings. The work session tonight will be the first opportunity  for the new superintendent and members of the board to make any official statement ofa position on the matter. Public concern has centered on the notion of implementing any CRT curriculum. Tonight may finally clarify the matter officially. All signs point to no administraative support or pending resolutions to add CRT to LCSD curriculum. Masks and CRT will be two of many things the Loveland School board will discuss during their work session tonight.

The Loveland City School District will meet tonight as scheduled for Tuesday, August 10, 2021. Meeting time is 6 p.m. in the LMS/LIS cafeteria.

Board Work Sessions are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the LMS/LIS Cafeteria unless otherwise noted.
