LOVELAND, OH (February 8, 2021) – In Issue 2021-25 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we say Happy Birthday to all the Boy Scouts of America today with a look at Cincinnati – The Queen City – home to the Dan Beard Council of the BSA.

Boy Scouts

The Boys Scouts of America was founded 111 years ago today.

About 110 million have participated in the Scouts program since its inception.  Most participate as Cub Scouts (ages 6-11) and/or Scouts (ages 10-18).

Similar organizations were formed slightly earlier: The Woodcraft Indians in 1902 in Connecticut and The Sons of Daniel Boone in 1905 by Daniel Carter Beard in Cincinnati.  These groups have influenced Robert Baden-Powell who founded the Scouting movement in England in 1907.

Were you or was someone in your family a Scout?

In honor of the Cincinnati Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts, here is a map of the Queen City by Samuel Augustus Mitchell from 1867.
