Mount Fuji Erupts!
The oldest recorded eruption of Mt. Fuji occurred in 781 on this day.
This iconic Japanese volcano sits majestically only 60 miles southwest of the most populous city in the world, Tokyo. The last eruption occurred in 1708.
Mt. Fuji is revered in Japan, and it is one of their three holy mountains.
Here is an early map of Japan and Korea by a European, Flemish Jodocus Hondius, from 1630. This part of the world was bit of a mystery to Europeans for a long time, as evidenced on this map with Japan being rather miss-shaped and Korea being presented as an island.
Steve Kovacs and his wife Theresa reside in Loveland, Ohio where they raised their two children. He is a passionate collector of antique maps.
