“Sock it to me”

See if you can guess the topic of today’s post before getting to the end…  if you are of a certain age, the title might have given it away already…

This NBC TV show, which ran for 140 episodes had regular segments including:

  1. Sock it to me – the phrase typical delivered via a cameo appearance, including Richard Nixon (moral of the story: be careful what you say…);
  2. News of the past… and news of the future – correctly predicting that Ronald Regan will be president and that the Berlin Wall will tumble down;
  3. The flying fickle finger of fate award – typically given to dubious “achievements” to those in government (lots of material here).

Here is a sample of regular or frequent guest actors: Goldie Hawn, Ruth Buzzy, Lilly Tomlin, Arte Johnson, (“verrry interesting, but shhtupid!)  Zsa Zsa Gabor, Flip Wilson, John Wayne, Johnny Carson, Jack Benny, and many more.

Yes, of course, today we celebrate the first show released in 1968 on this day of Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In.

Given the show was a bit sketchy at times, here is a pictorial map of Southern California, home to Laugh-In, by Putnam from 1963.
