FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-120 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (June 24, 2021) – In Issue 2021-120 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we make a visit to Jamaica.
No Problem, Man.
Kingston was founded on this day in 1692… Or was it about a month later, or in 1693? There are conflicting reports. We’ll stick to the earliest date.
Kingston rose to prominence on the island of Jamaica after Port Royal, a notorious pirate handout, was destroyed in an earthquake. It is the capital of this interesting nation of about 3 million.
Jamaica is a popular tourist destination, and it is home of mento, reggae, calypso music, Bob Marley, as well as Blue Mountain coffee and the Bobsled Team.
Here is a 1756 map of Jamaica by the French cartographer, Bellin.
