The USAFL Regional Championship will take place at Miami Meadows Park in Miami Township. The event date is set for June 27, 2020.

“We are excited to select Cincinnati as the host of our 2020 Eastern Regional Championships,” said Doren James, USAFL Executive Director.  “The United States Australian Football League’s (USAFL) first ever game was played in 1996 between Louisville and Cincinnati in Louisville.

The league was founded the following year in 1997 at the first USAFL Nationals in Cincinnati. The City has always been a great partner and we are looking forward to returning,” he added.
The annual championships include two Men’s Divisions and a Women’s Division, which will attract clubs from throughout the east coast including the Atlanta Kookaburras, Baltimore Dockers, Boston Demons, Columbus Cats, DC Eagles, New York Magpies, North Carolina Tigers, Philadelphia Hawks and Richmond Lions.

“Winning the bid to host this event was a great partnership opportunity with the Cincinnati USA Sports Commission, Miami Township and our CVB. We are excited to host this unique sporting event in Clermont County,” said Jeff Blom, President of the Clermont County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We will welcome teams and visitors from the east coast to discover our warm and inviting region. Our hotels, restaurants, attractions and retail shops will all enjoy increased business while this event is in town,” he added.

Australian Football is all-encompassing involving elements of many sports, including soccer, football, basketball and volleyball. Similar to soccer, players are posted at a number of positions – including forwards, wings and backs – and are allowed to kick the ball, also called the “footy,” as well as handle it with their hands. Although players have designated positions, they are free to move anywhere on the field at any point in time.

The game is played on an oval field about twice the size of an American football field. A traditional game consists of four quarters divided into 20 minutes of playing time. The game is scored by kicking the footy through goalposts at each end of the oval. When the ball is kicked through the middle posts the goal is worth six points. When kicked through the outer posts (on either side of the middle goal) the “behind” is worth one point.
“Miami Township is proud to partner with the Clermont County CVB and Cincinnati USA Sports Commission to host next June’s USAFL event. It is an opportunity for us to showcase our community, increase customers for the weekend to some of our businesses and to provide a chance for our residents to enjoy watching a unique sporting event,” said Jeff Wright, Miami Township Administrator.
The Clermont County Convention and Visitors Bureau partnered with Cincinnati USA Sports Commission to create a winning proposal to bring this event to the Cincinnati Region.
“We value our partnership with the Clermont County CVB in this USAFL 2020 bid procurement and have worked well together with Clermont County in securing a variety of amateur sporting events over the past two decades,” said Leslie Spencer, Executive Director of the Cincinnati USA Sports Commission.
The event is expected to bring over 300 athletes and spectators to Clermont County and Greater Cincinnati with an estimated $100,000 economic impact for hotels, restaurants, attractions and retail shops in the region.
