DAILY FEATURE: By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (January 13, 2021) – In Issue 2021-8 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps we learn the meaning of St. Knut’s Day celebrated in Finland and Sweden today.

End of Christmas Season

Have your taken your Christmas tree down?

Not until today if you are true to your Swedish or Finnish heritage (that is, if you have that).

Today is St. Knut’s day, Tjugndal Jul, celebrating the end of the Christmas season in Sweden and Finland.

As is often the case, you cannot make this up.  This day is named after a Danish duke killed in 1131, with ensuing civil war following…  Go figure.

Here is Tallis’ map of the Baltics, including the above-named countries.  It was issued in 1851 and has the customary vignettes of local life and sights.
