FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-119 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (June 23, 2021) – In Issue 2021-119 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we learn about the heritage of Luxembourg and what Bene means.
Bene– then What?
Those of certain age should know this… The precursor to the European Common Market and the European Union was Bene—Lux. Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
Luxembourg is a small country with rich heritage. The name traces to the Latin for small castle. It is a rather unique country given that about half of its residents are foreign, it is the home of the EU’s high court, and it is one of the four EU capitals. Historically, it is also known to have rather loosey-goosey banking regulations.
Today is Luxembourg National Day!
Here is a map of the capital, Luxembourg City from 1581 by Braun and Hogenberg.
