Walk event and Paxton’s Golf Outing research grant highlight month of May for CFK

By Chuck Gibson

LOVELAND, OH (June 8, 2021) – CancerFree Kids based in Loveland continues to make a remarkable difference with research funding in the battle against childhood cancer. Here is an update on their efforts from this past month of May.

Your CancerFree KIDS May Update!

CancerFree KIDS Butterfly Walk Experience, presented by Anthem, raised $89,468!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the CancerFree KIDS Butterfly Walk! We had a great turnout at Cottell Park where families enjoyed the Butterfly Walking Storyboard full of activities for kids and signs honoring individuals who have battled childhood cancer. Many more brought the Butterfly Walk into their own neighborhoods by walking and completing activities at home!

We are so grateful to all of the participants, fundraisers, donors, volunteers and sponsors who made this weekend a success! We can’t wait to see you next year!

Mission Moment

CancerFree KIDS Grant Recipient, Dr. Nicolas Nassar, shows promising results as he continues his research!

In 2019, CancerFree KIDS awarded the Paxton’s Golf Outing Research Grant to Dr. Nicolas Nassar at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to test the potential of a new agent, IODVA1, to treat a high-risk form of leukemia. Since our initial seed funding, Dr. Nassar’s research has shown promise that has led to an additional $2 million in funding from the National Cancer Institute. He is well on his way to phase I clinical trial!

Dr. Nassar’s research team at CCHMC has shown that the molecule they developed, IODVA1, is effective in models of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), especially leukemias that relapsed or are resistant to current therapies, as well as hard-to-treat acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Importantly, IODVA1 also boosts the potency of a variety of FDA-approved drugs.

Most recently, Dr. Nassar partnered with biotech giant SANOFI to identify additional diseases/indications that would benefit from the drug.

CancerFree KIDS is proud to partner with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to fund ground-breaking research like Dr. Nassar’s. We look forward to sharing more as we continue to follow his team’s progress. Most importantly, we thank Dr. Nassar and his team for helping to carry out CancerFree KIDS’ mission!
