By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (March 21, 2022) – In Issue 2022-055 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, the birth of a concert era.

Rock and Roll

Today is the 70th year anniversary of first major rock and roll concert.

The Moondog Coronation Ball was organized by Alan Freed, a disc jockey at WJW Radio in Cleveland.  Tickets cost $1.75 at the door.  The Dominoes, Paul Williams and other performed.

Music hasn’t been the same since: Elvis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Moody Blues, Aretha Franklin, Prince, Chuck Berry, Beach Boys, and so on.

No wonder Cleveland is the site of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which opened in 1983.

Here is Suchy’s map of Cleveland from 1937 (Elvis was 2 years old then).
