Donors Needed Immediately
FROM HOXWORTH BLOOD CENTER: Cara Nicolas, Associate Director, Public Relations
CINCINNATI (June 24, 2020) – Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, is re-issuing a plea for blood donors just weeks after going on a critical appeal for blood.

According to Hoxworth officials, blood supplies are at a critically low level. “Usage has increased by twenty percent in the past two weeks”, states blood center director, Jose Cancelas, MD, PhD. “A record number of transplants have been performed and we do not see this trend fading any time soon. Additionally, hospitals are increasing their services following a setback brought on by COVID-19. This renewed activity, along with the increased traumas seen in the summer months, is of a high concern.”
The blood center is asking all eligible individuals to schedule a blood donation immediately, especially those with type O+ or O- blood. Multiple heavy users are still receiving transfusions, and the need is expected to increase.
Blood donation continues to be a safe and sterile process, according to Hoxworth officials, and the blood center is taking the safety of donors very seriously during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Appointments are highly encouraged at this time in order to control the flow of donors and maintain social distancing protocol. To schedule a donation, call (513) 451-0910 or visit www.hoxworth.org.
