DAILY FEATURE: By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (November 9, 2020) – In Issue 105 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps gives us some Pearl Harbor History.

Pearl Harbor, Oahu, HI Memorial. (Chuck Gibson)
The US took possession of Pearl Harbor on Oahu in 1887 on this day. This was according to the treaty signed by the US and the Kingdom of Hawaii.
Mother nature made this area a shallow bay. Then a chief of one of the original Polynesian groups occupying Hawaii cut a channel and thus making the estuary navigable.
The locals called the area Wai Momi, or Waters of Pearl.

Subsequently Pearl Harbor has grown into a strategic naval base, which the Japanese Navy took notice and in hindsight foolishly bombed on that day in infamy, December 7, 1941.
Here is a pictorial map of Oahu by Ruth Taylor White from 1930.
