FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2022-061 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (March 29, 2022) – In Issue 2022-061 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we learn about one big step toward independence north of the border.
NORTH OF THE BORDER
The slow process of full Canadian independence from Britain took a big step in 1867 on this day.
The first portion of the British North America Act was signed on that day defining much of the governmental structure of Canada. Further, it created the Dominion of Canada consisting of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario.
About twenty additional Acts followed. Full Canadian control over the Constitution was not achieved until 1982.
Here is Lucas’s map of the eastern portion of Canada from 1823.
